As Team GB’s victors put their medals in their sock drawers and return to some sort of normality, I suspect that there is a sizeable minority who are feeling less than cheerful at the glittering success of our cyclists.

Motorists who have grown used to regarding anyone on a bike as an irksome obstacle to be got past will be dreading the propect of being held up on their commutes by increasing numbers of pedallers, newly inspired by the Olympics (and the Tour de France).

It remains to be seen whether we will regard 2012 as the year in which Britain adopted a continental cycling culture, but in the meantime anyone relying on four wheeled transport would be advised to set their alarm a few minutes earlier.
